Ingredients
  

For the custard

  • 6 egg yolks 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup 1 cup mascarpone cheese Use high-quality for best results.

For the whipped cream

  • 1 cup 1 cup heavy cream Whip until soft peaks form.

For the assembly

  • 1 cup 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled Espresso can be used for a stronger flavor.
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional) Omit for a non-alcoholic version.
  • 24 pieces 24 ladyfinger cookies
  • Cocoa powder for dusting
  • Dark chocolate shavings (optional)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a saucepan, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar over medium heat until pale and creamy.
  • Gradually add the milk, continuing to stir for 5-7 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form.
  • Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese into the cooled egg mixture, then fold in the whipped cream until well combined.

Assembly

  • In a shallow dish, mix the brewed coffee with coffee liqueur, if using.
  • Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they do not soak.
  • Layer half of the dipped ladyfingers at the bottom of a serving dish. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture on top.
  • Repeat with the remaining ladyfingers and mascarpone mixture.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  • Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder and add chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

Store tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Best enjoyed fresh. Experiment with different liqueurs and toppings for variety.
